Smith Weight Machine
The World Of The Smith Weight Machine At A Glance
To risk stating the obvious, a smith weight machine is a piece of gym equipment that is used mostly for weight training exercises. It was the American, Jack La Lanne who invented the smith weight machines back in 1950 in his gym. Rudy Smith, a professional body builder discovered the invention and commissioned an expert to improve it for the Vic Tanny's gym located in downtown Los Angeles.
The machine features a fixed barbell (as opposed to free weights) that is constrained in firm steel guardrails. This ensures that the barbell can only move vertically. Some modern smith weight machines have a barbell that is counterbalanced. You simply add on the weight plates to accumulate the desired weight intensity and then take an appropriate position on an inbuilt bench to lift the weights.
The bench itself in most smith weight machines can be adjusted to assume an inclined, flat or declined position. Modern versions of the smith weight machine allow constrained horizontal movement both forwards and backwards, so as to cater for a variety of exercises. Another key feature of smith weight machines is a weight rack that has two cardinal functions. For one, it assists in the storage of training weights and secondly, it helps to stabilize the machine.
The smith weight machine makes training a delight. For instance, if you were using a free weight barbell, you have to re-rack every time you finish a set of reps. But with the machine, you just insert the weight in any slot among the series provided all along the weight’s pathway. This ensures that the weight can be securely racked at any one point when a trainer reaches absolute muscle failure even without the help of a trainer.
Actually, the greatest benefit of using a smith weight machine is the fact that your training session will be totally secured against any mishaps with heavy weights. The racking incorporates pegs and safety catches that ensure that the weight can always be managed and kept out of harms way.
Finally, a trainer does not have to stabilize the weight himself or herself while using the smith weight machine. This allows body builders to train with heavier weights than they possible could while using free weights. Resistance training, and in particular the gain of muscle mass, depends on the amount of intensity you accumulate during training sessions. The ability to lift heavier weights therefore allows you to amplify your training intensity for greater gains.
You should always opt for a smith weight machine if faced with a choice between machine and free weight training. This is because you will be able to maintain proper exercises form throughout, lift heavier and be totally safe from injuries and accidents.
Nonetheless, before you settle on one type of the smith weight machines, research the market and study the assortment of features included in each brand. This will help you determine which one is best suited for your needs.
